Here's what nobody on the earnings call asked: what happens when a revenue cycle analyst at a health system types "show me all patients with diabetes who were readmitted within 30 days" into a natural language interface that sits on top of a warehouse containing PHI?
The answer is either "something very useful" or "something very expensive in regulatory fines," and the gap between those outcomes is entirely determined by how your data team architected the governance layer underneath.
Natural Language Access Is a Governance Problem, Not a Feature Problem
Snowflake Intelligence works by translating plain English into SQL and executing it against your tables. For a SaaS company querying product analytics, this is straightforward. For a healthcare organization sitting on claims data, clinical records, and patient demographics, it's a minefield.
The traditional access control model in healthcare data platforms is role-based and column-level. You define who can see what, lock it down with row access policies and dynamic data masking, and sleep at night. Natural language interfaces blow a hole in that model—not because they bypass security, but because they dramatically expand the surface area of queries your users will attempt.
When a user had to write SQL or build a dashboard request, the friction was a de facto governance mechanism. Clunky, sure. But it meant that only people who understood the data model were querying sensitive tables. Remove that friction, and suddenly every department head with a Snowflake login can explore clinical datasets they've never touched before.

Route all natural language queries through a semantic layer (dbt Semantic Layer, Cube, AtScale) that enforces business logic, metric definitions, and access policies. The LLM should translate intent to semantic layer queries, not raw SQL.
- Column-level tagging with sensitivity classification. Every column containing PHI, PII, or sensitive financial data needs to be tagged in your governance catalog. Snowflake's object tagging plus tag-based masking policies should be non-negotiable. If a column is tagged as PHI and the querying user's role doesn't have PHI access, the data gets masked before the LLM ever sees it.
- Query audit logging with intent tracking. Standard query logging tells you what SQL ran. With natural language interfaces, you also need to capture the original plain-text question. When your compliance team needs to investigate access patterns, "SELECT patient_id, diagnosis_code FROM claims WHERE..." is less useful than knowing someone asked "which oncology patients switched insurance providers last quarter." Intent matters for audit.
- Guardrails at the agent level, not just the database level. Snowflake's row access policies are necessary but not sufficient. You need a layer between the natural language input and SQL generation that can reject or redirect queries based on content policy. If someone asks for individually identifiable patient data without a valid use case context, the agent should refuse before the query is even compiled.
The Real Risk Is Moving Too Slow
Here's the counterintuitive take: the biggest risk for healthcare data teams isn't adopting Snowflake Intelligence too fast. It's adopting it too slowly while your organization's business users find their own workarounds.
Shadow AI is already a problem in healthcare IT. If your clinical operations team can't get natural language access to data through a governed channel, they'll paste data into ChatGPT. They'll export CSVs and upload them to third-party tools. The ungoverned path is always available, and it's always worse.
